Getting started with something is always a little bit daunting, especially when thinking about a website, but if you break it down into doable, easy steps, it’s easier to begin and finish!

Even if you’re not really ready to look for a web designer, you can start your own website design process by exploring your business or organization’s website goals, hone in on who your ideal website visitor is and what their needs are, drawing inspiration from the websites you love, and plan the ideal path that you would like your website visitors to take through your website.

Here are 4 easy steps to get started right now:

  1. Explore your Website Goals

Goals give direction and purpose. In this first step, you’ll think about your website goals and what you want your website to accomplish. Your goals may be selling your products or services or to grow your email list.

  2. Hone in on who your ideal website visitor is

Get clear on what type of person you are trying to attract to your website. Who are you trying to appeal to? Creating your ideal website visitor is called creating an avatar. Think about your client avatar’s name, gender and age, their occupation and where they live, basically everything about them.

  3. Get inspiration from websites you love

I’m sure there are websites that you just love. Get a little more granular and really analyze those websites for what feature you really love and what you must have on your website.

  4. Plan how you will guide your website visitors through your website

Just as you have an ideal client. There is an ideal way you’ll want your website visitor to walk through your website. For example if you are a photographer you will want your website visitor to go to your portfolio, look at your testimonials, view your services and pricing, and then contact you/book an appointment. The steps along the way will become pages and these important pages will part of the navigation, and at the bottom of each page a “Call to Action” button like “See my portfolio” will guide them along the way.
